About the Hokianga

With its unique beauty, tranquility, sporting and leisure opportunities, the Hokianga Harbour has a huge amount to offer.

The Harbour is situated on Northland’s West Coast, approximately 3 1/2 hours drive from Auckland, or an hour’s drive from the Bay of Islands on the opposite coast.

The Hokianga is steeped in history, it has a Maori history dating back many centuries and was one of the first parts of New Zealand to be settled by Europeans in the early 1800’s.

Today the Hokianga offers unrivalled beauty and a range of great local activities. You can swim at the safe swimming beaches in the harbour or explore the dramatic surf beaches, ancient kauri forest and historic townships. The more adventurous may wish to try sandboarding on the dunes, sea kayaking, horse riding, or fishing.
